How to search people by city on Facebook: With hundreds of millions of people on Facebook, tracking down long-lost friends or meeting new ones on this global social networking platform might not be as easy as simply searching by name. Being able to run a search based on a user's city of residence is a very handy feature, but using this search option on Facebook is not as straightforward as it may seem. You need to know the correct search options and how to use them to perform your search.

1. Browse to Facebook.com and log in to your account.

2. Type in the partial or full name of the person you are searching for in the search bar at the top of the page. This could be a first name, last name or just a few letters from the name. You cannot conduct a blank search on Facebook so you must enter at least one letter.

3. Click "Search" to execute a search for Facebook users who match your query parameters.

4. Click the "People" icon on the left side of the page to narrow down the search results solely to people.

5. Click the "Location" drop-down menu and select "Location."

6. Type in the city you want to search in and press the "Enter" key to find people on Facebook based on city.

How to Get Facebook to Display People by Town

With 845 million active Facebook users, as of March 2012, finding friends on the social networking site can be challenging, particularly if you want to find friends who live in a particular area. Changing the filter when searching for friends allows you to select only friends who attended your college, worked at the same place as you, listed the same home town or indicated they live in a particular area. Display Facebook members who live in a certain town by following the same process.

1. Log in to your Facebook account.

2. Type any letter into the search bar at the top of any Facebook page. When you start typing, a menu appears that lists possible matches. Slide down to the bottom of that menu and click on "See More Options."

3. Click on "People" from the menu on the left side of the screen. Erase what you started to type in the search bar at the top of the screen.

4. Choose the "Location" option from the drop-down menu near the top of the new screen and in the search box next to that menu type the name of the city and state where you want to find friends. Again, as you type, suggestions appear below the box. When you see the name of the place you want to search, slide down to that name and click.

Tip

• Anyone who has restricted privacy settings or has blocked you should not appear in your search.

Warning

• Be sure to erase the name you started to type in the search box once you click on "See More Options." If you forget, Facebook searches only for people with that name.
