When you unblock an account in Instagram, the restrictions associated with blocking someone are lifted. That means they:
- Will be able to find you again using Instagram search;
- Can see your posts and stories again;
- Will be able to follow you again (this will not happen automatically, though); and
- They can send you private messages using Instagram Direct again.
Note: If you have allowed direct messages from the user before, you will also receive all messages they sent in the meantime. If you have not exchanged direct messages with them, the first message from the user after you unblock them will only appear as a request in Instagram Direct.
The user will not be notified when you unblock them.

After Unblocking Someone on Instagram, Do I Have to Follow Them Again to Get Updates?

Can I Unblock Someone Who Also Blocked Me on Instagram?
Trying to unblock someone who has, in turn, blocked you on Instagram can be a frustrating and, alas, usually fruitless experience. This is because you are blocked from seeing the account, and you need to access the account menu to unblock them.
Your best bet is an @mention, say in a private message:
- Tap the Instagram Direct icon (a paper airplane) in Instagram for iOS or Android.
- Tap + to start a new message.
- Write your own Instagram user name under To:.
- Using Instagram for iOS, tap Next.
- Write @ followed directly by the user name of the account you wish to unblock.
- Example: For the user heinztsc, type: @heinztsc
- Tap Send.
- Now tap the highlighted user name in the message you just sent.
- Open the user profile menu (··· on iOS and ⋮ on Android).
- Select Unblock from the menu that has appeared and confirm your choice.
- Note: If the person has changed their user name since you blocked them, you will not be able to unblock them using this method.
If the direct message trick does not work for you, here are a few more ways you can try to access the account you want to unblock:
Note: These methods may be inaccessible depending on the app and platform you are using:
- Instagram search;
- Type the direct profile page address ( https://www.instagram.com/username ) in a web browser;
- Find a post from them you have liked;
- Find a photo or video you saved privately to your account or a collection.
Can I Unblock or Remove Blocked Accounts That No Longer Exist?
Depending on the app or web site, it may not be possible to unblock Instagram profiles that have been deleted or removed since you blocked them. Their names will appear on your Blocked Users list with no way to interact with them.
Tip: If possible, try the Instagram app on a different platform. We have seen Instagram for Android able to unblock users that the Instagram web site and iOS app reported as nonexistent or inaccessible.
One thing you can do to avoid stale accounts on your Instagram "Blocked Users" list is reporting suspicious accounts and activity to Instagram (Report > It's spam or Report > It's inappropriate in the user's menu) instead of blocking users that you deem to be fake accounts.
